Overview
This study records the process of transforming the Japanese lyrics of Migratory Fish into English that can actually be sung.
Rather than reproducing every word, the work examines how meaning, ambiguity, breath, rhythm and image can survive in another language.
Process
Translation
The original ambiguity and imagery were preserved without forcing the words into a single interpretation.
Singable English
Breath, phrasing and musical movement were prioritised so the English could function as a song.
Notes
Translation may end with understanding. Singing begins when words acquire breath. The lyrics themselves remain in Journal 001; this page records only the process that led to them.
